What we're looking for, and how to send it.
Vestibule Quarterly is a magazine of the antechamber — the work that happens in doorways, waiting rooms, and thresholds. We want writing and images made in the pause before the thing itself: the moment between stimulus and response, between the shadow and the lit room, between normal mode and the command not yet entered. If a piece lives in that in-between, we want to read it.
We're reading now for our first issue, Normal Mode: on conditioning, keybindings, and the escape key. The default state you return to and the reflexes that keep you there — the schedule of reinforcement, the muscle memory, the chord you hit without looking — and the moment the mode drops out from under you and stops responding. Send us work about control and its failure: the breakdown, the loop, the command that finally doesn't take.
Precision over volume. A clear eye. Curiosity that has done its reading. We like work that treats a mystery as something to enter rather than solve, and that trusts the reader to cross the threshold on their own. Subtlety travels further here than spectacle.
